$2 million lottery winnings after taxes
A $2 million cash prize can be a fixed second-tier win. Confirm the payment amount before comparing it with an annuity headline.
Cash payment and federal estimate
The site applies a conservative 37% federal planning rate to the whole cash prize: $740,000 federal tax, leaving $1,260,000 before state tax. This is the shared calculator method, not a progressive tax-return calculation. It ignores deductions, other income and credits. Your effective federal rate can be lower. No cash-value discount is applied to a cash payment.

State estimates use the shared state planning rates, with sources and individual checked dates on each linked state page. Local taxes are excluded, including New York City, Yonkers and Maryland counties. California assumes a California Lottery ticket. Where a rate is being verified, the displayed federal-only amount is incomplete. A state with no lottery may still tax a resident's out-of-state win. The table does not calculate two-state credits.
Withholding versus what you owe
Regular federal lottery withholding is 24% when winnings minus the wager exceed $5,000. Ignoring the ticket cost, about $480,000 would be withheld on this payment. Withholding is a credit against your bill. Our 37% estimate leaves a further $260,000 federal reserve, plus any state difference. Keep your Form W-2G and ask about estimated payments; waiting until filing can create an underpayment issue.
Powerball and Mega Millions prize context
Powerball Match 5 with Power Play pays a published $2 million regardless of the drawn multiplier; it is not multiplied again. Mega Millions Match 5 with its built-in 2x multiplier can also pay $2 million. Published prizes remain subject to game rules and pari-mutuel exceptions. Check the issuing lottery before making a financial commitment.
Common questions
Does this apply to an advertised jackpot?
Only if the cash payment equals $2 million. For an annuity headline, enter the actual cash option in the lottery tax calculator, or compare annual payments in the payout calculator.
Is 37% my exact federal tax?
No. It is a conservative planning rate on the entire payment. Federal income tax uses progressive brackets and your return determines the final amount. The 24% withheld at claim is not the final tax rate.
Which state should I choose?
Start with your residence, then review the ticket-state guide if you bought elsewhere. Follow the state pages for exceptions and sources.
