Quick answers

How much tax do you pay on lottery winnings?

Federal tax of up to 37% on large prizes, plus state tax from 0% to about 11% depending on where you live, plus city tax in New York City and Yonkers. At claim time only 24% federal is withheld; the rest is due when you file.

Which states don't tax lottery winnings?

California (for California Lottery prizes), Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Alaska and Nevada have no lottery and no income tax. See the state guides.

Is the lump sum or the annuity better?

The lump sum is smaller but paid at once; the annuity pays 30 yearly payments that grow 5% a year. Read our lump sum vs annuity guide before you choose.

Do you sell lottery tickets?

No. LotteryTaxHub is an independent information site. We do not sell tickets and we are not affiliated with any lottery.
