2026 rate remains 5.99%

Take-home pay on a lump-sum prize in Rhode Island
The table applies the top federal rate of 37% plus 5.99% Rhode Island tax. Amounts are the cash (lump-sum) value you receive, not the advertised annuity jackpot.
| Cash prize | Federal (37%) | State | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| $1.00M | −$370,000 | −$59,900 | $570,100 |
| $10.00M | −$3.70M | −$599,000 | $5.70M |
| $100.00M | −$37.00M | −$5.99M | $57.01M |
| $500.00M | −$185.00M | −$29.95M | $285.05M |
| $1.00B | −$370.00M | −$59.90M | $570.10M |
Federal figure is the total owed at the top bracket. At claim time only 24% is withheld; the rest is due when you file. Smaller prizes can fall into lower brackets, so the real federal bill may be less.
An announced change for 2027
News reports describe an announced surtax on income over $1 million scheduled from 2027. We could not open an official page confirming its effective date and schedule. Treat it as announced; it does not change our 2026 rate, and we have not applied a future surtax to the calculator.
US residents and border claims
The Lottery describes its withholding for all US residents, rather than only Rhode Island residents. Winners from Massachusetts or Connecticut should check their filing duties and home-state credits. Withholding alone does not determine the final tax bill.
Common questions
Does the announced millionaire surtax change this 2026 estimate?
