Millionaire for Life calculator

Compare $1 million a year for life with $18 million cash, or the second prize of $100,000 a year with $2.2 million cash. Choose a prize and your state for an after-tax planning estimate.

These are fixed prize options from the game chart, not a changing advertised jackpot. The yearly selection shows one payment. It does not estimate your lifespan, investment returns or a lifetime total.

Bought your ticket in another state? That state may tax the prize too. How ticket state vs home state works.

Worked examples: 37% federal tax on the whole cash prize plus the verified home-state rate. No city or county taxes in this table. New York City and Yonkers can be selected above. A jurisdiction marked ?being verified? has no state-inclusive estimate here. Buying-state nonresident tax can also affect a claim.

The yearly choice: income brackets matter

The top prize pays $1 million per year for life, with a minimum of 20 years of payments under the game rules. The second prize pays $100,000 per year for life with the same minimum payment period. Cash choices are $18 million and $2.2 million respectively. The top prize is pari-mutuel: multiple winners and game rules can change payouts.

Each yearly payment is income in the year received. The calculator uses a 37% federal planning estimate across the payment, rather than calculating progressive brackets. On $100,000 especially, that can substantially overstate federal tax. The effective rate depends on filing status, other income and deductions. A state with brackets or an income surtax can also tax yearly payments differently from a large cash option.

Regular federal withholding is 24% on proceeds above $5,000 after the wager. That is a payment toward your tax bill, not a separate extra tax. Our tool treats the entered amount as proceeds. The full bill can differ from what was withheld.

A lifetime prize is different from a jackpot annuity

Powerball and Mega Millions have 30 growing payments. Millionaire for Life has fixed yearly amounts tied to the winner's life and its minimum payment period. Do not apply the 30-payment schedule or a 5% yearly increase to this game. The cash choice is set in the prize chart, so no estimated jackpot cash ratio is needed.

Millionaire for Life questions

Does the yearly estimate show my exact tax?

No. It uses the same conservative top-rate math as our other tools. A personal calculation needs income brackets, deductions and any local or nonresident tax. Future rates can change.

Are payments made for at least 20 years?

The prize chart sets a 20-year minimum payment period for both lifetime tiers. Confirm your selling lottery's rules for beneficiary payments if a winner dies during that period.

Why are some states missing from the selling table?

The table includes the 31 jurisdictions listed on the game page checked November 4, 2026. Other states may appear in the controls because residence and ticket purchase location can differ.
