Missouri lottery taxes: 4.7%, with 4% withheld from $600
Rate checked on November 4, 2026 against the sources listed at the end of this page.
Missouri has a graduated income tax, but its brackets are narrow and the top rate of 4.7% starts at a low income level. For a lottery prize of any real size, that means about 4.7% of the prize goes to the state.
Missouri law also has a small-prize rule you will not find in most states: lottery prizes that add up to less than $600 in a year are exempt from Missouri income tax and from local earnings tax (RSMo 313.321).
Take-home pay on a lump-sum prize in Missouri
The table applies the top federal rate of 37% plus 4.7% Missouri tax. Amounts are the cash (lump-sum) value you receive, not the advertised annuity jackpot.
| Cash prize | Federal (37%) | State | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| $1.00M | −$370,000 | −$47,000 | $583,000 |
| $10.00M | −$3.70M | −$470,000 | $5.83M |
| $100.00M | −$37.00M | −$4.70M | $58.30M |
| $500.00M | −$185.00M | −$23.50M | $291.50M |
| $1.00B | −$370.00M | −$47.00M | $583.00M |
Federal figure is the total owed at the top bracket. At claim time only 24% is withheld; the rest is due when you file. Smaller prizes can fall into lower brackets, so the real federal bill may be less.
Withholding: 4% from $600
RSMo 313.321 tells the state to withhold 4% from each Missouri Lottery prize or periodic payment of $600 or more. That is well below the federal $5,000 line, so a $1,000 prize can have Missouri tax withheld but no federal tax withheld. It is also below the 4.7% rate you owe: on a $10 million prize, expect about $70,000 more (0.7%) to be due when you file.
Kansas City and St. Louis earnings tax
Kansas City and St. Louis have their own earnings tax. The state law exempts prizes under $600 from local earnings tax, which suggests larger prizes might be covered, but we could not confirm how either city treats a lottery prize. Ask the city's revenue office. City earnings tax is not included in our calculator.
Nonresidents: check with the state
The 4% withholding rule does not depend on where you live, but we could not confirm on an official page how Missouri taxes a nonresident's prize when they file. Residents of Kansas, Illinois and other neighbors should check with the Missouri Lottery or the Department of Revenue. See our Illinois and Kentucky guides and ticket state vs home state.
A rate with built-in cuts
Missouri law has revenue triggers that can lower the top rate in future years. The Department of Revenue's 2026 withholding formula still uses 4.7%. Annuity winners should check each year's rate.
