Vermont Lottery Taxes: Rate and Withholding Research
Vermont's current income-tax statute includes an 8.75% top marginal rate. The Lottery's prize FAQ separately describes at least 6% state withholding on winnings over $5,000. A withholding percentage and a marginal income-tax rate answer different questions.
What was confirmed for 2026
The current statute supports the 8.75% top percentage, but we did not confirm a complete 2026 inflation-adjusted income-tax schedule from an accessible revenue document. The revenue website lists 2026 materials, while the requested PDF returned 403. We did not bypass that restriction. This page therefore does not publish unconfirmed 2026 bracket thresholds or activate a new calculator rate.
Withholding and a Vermont claim
The Lottery FAQ also describes backup withholding when a correct taxpayer identification number is missing. Do not apply the ordinary over-$5,000 rule to every claim without checking that distinction. The FAQ says most Vermont games have a 365-day draw claim period; confirm the exact Powerball or Mega Millions ticket and any cash-election deadline with the issuing lottery. A New Hampshire purchase is not proof of an exemption on a Vermont resident's return.
Calculator coverage and next steps
The shared calculator still marks Vermont's state rate being verified. These research findings have not been activated in its state data. A federal-only output is incomplete. For a large payment, identify the actual cash amount, the payment year, your residence and the ticket state before comparing estimates. This page does not settle deductions, credits or local taxes.
Use the Vermont calculator preset with that limitation in mind, review the withheld-versus-owed comparison, and compare cash prizes by amount. State-specific claim deadlines or privacy protections not expressly confirmed above remain being verified; contact the issuing lottery before relying on them.
Common questions
Does withholding finish my return?
No. It is a payment credited against the tax determined on a return. Regular federal lottery withholding is 24% when winnings minus the wager exceed $5,000. The site's 37% federal planning rate is deliberately conservative and does not compute progressive brackets.
Should I add both states' top rates?
No combined result is calculated here. Review source rules and resident credits with both sets of documents. The ticket-state guide explains the questions to ask.
