Utah Resident: Lottery Ticket Bought in a Neighboring State

By · Checked November 6, 2026

For a Utah resident with a ticket bought in Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado or Arizona, the ticket-state claim and the Utah return are separate questions. Utah's TC-40 instructions start the return with federal adjusted gross income. A lack of lottery sales in Utah is not evidence that a resident's out-of-state winnings escape tax.

Bought in Idaho, live in Utah

Use a $1 million cash win as a planning example. The site's federal-only reserve leaves $630,000 after a conservative $370,000 federal estimate. Idaho's current site planning rate is explained on its state page. Utah's 2026 rate and an actual two-state credit are not computed here. The federal-only figure is incomplete and should not be used as the amount available to spend.

What the available instructions establish

The accessible TC-40 booklet is labeled tax year 2025, not 2026. It establishes the federal-AGI starting point and discusses credits for income taxed by another state. An earlier Tax Commission gambling decision also treats gambling income as part of federal AGI. Neither source alone confirms every 2026 lottery adjustment or credit. Retain the source-state withholding record and use the current payment-year instructions when available; do not relabel the old booklet as a 2026 rate table.

Calculator coverage and next steps

The shared calculator still marks Utah's state rate being verified. These research findings have not been activated in its state data. A federal-only output is incomplete. For a large payment, identify the actual cash amount, the payment year, your residence and the ticket state before comparing estimates. This page does not settle deductions, credits or local taxes.

Use the Utah calculator preset with that limitation in mind, review the withheld-versus-owed comparison, and compare cash prizes by amount. State-specific claim deadlines or privacy protections not expressly confirmed above remain being verified; contact the issuing lottery before relying on them.

Common questions

Does withholding finish my return?

No. It is a payment credited against the tax determined on a return. Regular federal lottery withholding is 24% when winnings minus the wager exceed $5,000. The site's 37% federal planning rate is deliberately conservative and does not compute progressive brackets.

Should I add both states' top rates?

No combined result is calculated here. Review source rules and resident credits with both sets of documents. The ticket-state guide explains the questions to ask.
