North Dakota Lottery Taxes: 2026 Rate Research

By · Checked November 6, 2026

North Dakota's 2026 Form ND-1ES includes a 2.50% top income-tax rate. Its estimated-tax schedule starts that top bracket above $250,400 single and $304,850 married filing jointly. These are 2026 income-tax figures, not a statement of the lottery's claim-time withholding.

Use the 2026 estimated-tax schedule

The main revenue page still labels its displayed rate table as tax year 2025. For this research we use the dated 2026 ND-1ES rather than relabeling the old table. The 2026 document has a zero-rate band, a 1.95% middle band and a 2.50% upper band. A large prize is therefore not taxed at the top rate on every dollar when the full schedule is applied.

Estimated payments after a windfall

ND-1ES explains that the estimated-payment obligation depends on several conditions, including prior-year liability, expected current-year liability and expected withholding. A large claim is a reason to review that worksheet, not a reason to assume the W-2G settles everything. Specific lottery withholding and a complete nonresident-prize analysis remain being verified here. A Minnesota purchase requires separate Minnesota review even when the winner returns to North Dakota.

Calculator coverage and next steps

The shared calculator still marks North Dakota's state rate being verified. These research findings have not been activated in its state data. A federal-only output is incomplete. For a large payment, identify the actual cash amount, the payment year, your residence and the ticket state before comparing estimates. This page does not settle deductions, credits or local taxes.

Use the North Dakota calculator preset with that limitation in mind, review the withheld-versus-owed comparison, and compare cash prizes by amount. State-specific claim deadlines or privacy protections not expressly confirmed above remain being verified; contact the issuing lottery before relying on them.

Common questions

Does withholding finish my return?

No. It is a payment credited against the tax determined on a return. Regular federal lottery withholding is 24% when winnings minus the wager exceed $5,000. The site's 37% federal planning rate is deliberately conservative and does not compute progressive brackets.

Should I add both states' top rates?

No combined result is calculated here. Review source rules and resident credits with both sets of documents. The ticket-state guide explains the questions to ask.
