Mississippi Lottery Taxes: 2026 Rate Research
Mississippi Revenue's tax-year table specifies 4% on taxable income above $10,000 for 2026. Its page also discusses returns filed during 2026 for tax year 2025, which use 4.4%. The year income is received matters; the filing calendar alone does not select the rate.
Lottery rules versus casino rules
The Revenue FAQ describes a separate 3% nonrefundable tax for Mississippi casino winnings. That casino rule is not sufficient evidence of the lottery rate. We have confirmed the general 2026 income-tax schedule and keep lottery-specific rate application and withholding being verified until a clear revenue or legal source settles the distinction. No casino percentage is inserted into the lottery calculator.
Claim period and identity
The Mississippi Lottery FAQ gives 180 days from the drawing for multistate draw games and 90 days after game end for scratch tickets. It says the holder's identity will not be disclosed without written permission. The same FAQ refers to applicable taxes on prizes of $600 or more without establishing a state withholding percentage. Contact the Lottery for that percentage and a large-prize appointment before sending the original ticket. Mississippi residents buying in Louisiana must separately review Louisiana's source and claim rules.
Calculator coverage and next steps
The shared calculator still marks Mississippi's state rate being verified. These research findings have not been activated in its state data. A federal-only output is incomplete. For a large payment, identify the actual cash amount, the payment year, your residence and the ticket state before comparing estimates. This page does not settle deductions, credits or local taxes.
Use the Mississippi calculator preset with that limitation in mind, review the withheld-versus-owed comparison, and compare cash prizes by amount. State-specific claim deadlines or privacy protections not expressly confirmed above remain being verified; contact the issuing lottery before relying on them.
Common questions
Does withholding finish my return?
No. It is a payment credited against the tax determined on a return. Regular federal lottery withholding is 24% when winnings minus the wager exceed $5,000. The site's 37% federal planning rate is deliberately conservative and does not compute progressive brackets.
Should I add both states' top rates?
No combined result is calculated here. Review source rules and resident credits with both sets of documents. The ticket-state guide explains the questions to ask.
