Hawaii Resident: Lottery Ticket Bought on the Mainland
Hawaii has no land-border neighbor. For a Hawaii resident, the practical cross-border scenario is a ticket bought during a mainland trip, for example in California. Hawaii's N-11 resident instructions say residents are taxed on income from all sources; a mainland purchase is not automatically exempt at home.
Bought in California, live in Hawaii
Consider a $1 million cash payment from a California Lottery ticket. California's own Lottery-prize exemption is explained on our California page. The federal planning baseline leaves $630,000 after the site's conservative 37% estimate. That is before Hawaii tax. California's exemption does not establish an exemption on the Hawaii resident return, and we have not computed the 2026 Hawaii bill here.
Residence and payment-year instructions
The accessible N-11 booklet is tax year 2025. It supports the all-source resident-income principle, but is not a verified 2026 lottery tax table. The official forms index still lists that revision. A trip does not by itself change domicile; part-year and nonresident situations use different instructions. Keep travel, claim and payment records and confirm residence with a preparer. The 2026 rate and any state-specific adjustment remain being verified rather than being imported from a secondary-source table.
Calculator coverage and next steps
The shared calculator still marks Hawaii's state rate being verified. These research findings have not been activated in its state data. A federal-only output is incomplete. For a large payment, identify the actual cash amount, the payment year, your residence and the ticket state before comparing estimates. This page does not settle deductions, credits or local taxes.
Use the Hawaii calculator preset with that limitation in mind, review the withheld-versus-owed comparison, and compare cash prizes by amount. State-specific claim deadlines or privacy protections not expressly confirmed above remain being verified; contact the issuing lottery before relying on them.
Common questions
Does withholding finish my return?
No. It is a payment credited against the tax determined on a return. Regular federal lottery withholding is 24% when winnings minus the wager exceed $5,000. The site's 37% federal planning rate is deliberately conservative and does not compute progressive brackets.
Should I add both states' top rates?
No combined result is calculated here. Review source rules and resident credits with both sets of documents. The ticket-state guide explains the questions to ask.
