DC Lottery Taxes: 2026 Income-Tax Rate Research
The District's 2026 D-40ES estimated-tax booklet shows a 10.75% top marginal income-tax rate above $1 million of taxable income. The formula in that bracket is $91,525 plus 10.75% of income above $1 million. It is not 10.75% applied to the entire amount under the actual progressive schedule.
District income tax and claim withholding
The dated D-40ES booklet is stronger evidence for 2026 than an undated claim-page percentage. It confirms the resident income-tax schedule, but does not establish every lottery withholding rule. Claim-time District withholding, including its current threshold and nonresident scope, remains being verified on this page. A District resident should compare the amount withheld with the estimated return rather than interpreting a claim deduction as the final rate.
Bought in Maryland or Virginia
A ticket bought outside DC retains the selling jurisdiction's claim route. Maryland and Virginia can have source-state obligations and different withholding procedures. Do not add a full District top rate to a full source-state rate without examining any available credit. Residence, location of purchase and payment year should all be recorded for a preparer. The District is not one of the 50 states, but is included in our 51-jurisdiction comparisons.
Calculator coverage and next steps
The shared calculator still marks District of Columbia's state rate being verified. These research findings have not been activated in its state data. A federal-only output is incomplete. For a large payment, identify the actual cash amount, the payment year, your residence and the ticket state before comparing estimates. This page does not settle deductions, credits or local taxes.
Use the District of Columbia calculator preset with that limitation in mind, review the withheld-versus-owed comparison, and compare cash prizes by amount. State-specific claim deadlines or privacy protections not expressly confirmed above remain being verified; contact the issuing lottery before relying on them.
Common questions
Does withholding finish my return?
No. It is a payment credited against the tax determined on a return. Regular federal lottery withholding is 24% when winnings minus the wager exceed $5,000. The site's 37% federal planning rate is deliberately conservative and does not compute progressive brackets.
Should I add both states' top rates?
No combined result is calculated here. Review source rules and resident credits with both sets of documents. The ticket-state guide explains the questions to ask.
